Harry,

Here are the results of a post I made to general asking about
t-shirt printing. I ended up going with Apple, who did a shirt
for our project once, and which turned out great (3 colors on
the front, 2 on the back). It was a bit expensive, however; if I
remember correctly, it came out to $14 per shirt (factoring in
the $25 per screen, of which there were 5 in this case). It was
for a small number of shirts, though (20?).

I decided that Apple was the right way to go, despite the
cost, due to the quality of the shirts and its convenient location
(Sq. Hill). It took about two weeks to have the shirts done,
and I was quite satisfied with the results. Again, it was a bit
expensive; close to $14 per shirt for 12 shirts. I believe the
reason Apple is more expensive is because they charge more per t-shirt
than the other places; 8 or 9 dollars a shirt as opposed to 5 at some
of the places listed below. The prices for each screen seem to be
about the same at all of the places.

Here are the other opinions I received.

Just about one year ago exactly I had to get some shirts made up,
and posted a query on general.  Several people sent replies;
I ended up going with Apple in SqHill, and was quite pleased.

Sean,

I've had my t-shirts made at Apple T-Shirts in Squirrel Hill. For a
one color shirt figure on $25 for the screen, and about $5 per shirt.
They probably have a minimum of 36 shirts. Ask for Jeff Dunn when you
call, and tell him I sent you.

Sharon Serbin did the shirts for our soccer team this year. She'll do
multiple colors and everything, and any number. Send her mail at

There is a tuxedo rental/cleaner/tshirt/cap place on Wood St.
in Wilkinsburg. I forget the actual name of the place, but the
owner/operator is Mrs. Sapienza-Donnelly and she is cool.
Her son is in charge of the t-shirt/cap business. good prices
good work. I bet you could locate the phone # by looking up
tuxedo rental in wilkinsburg.

I once had some T-shirts and sweatshirts printed up for a conference
and was very happy with the timeliness and friendliness of the
following place:

	Apple T-shirt Company
Murray Ave, a little further down from Mineo's Pizza
	Place (I think)

They seemed to know what they were doing, and they will work on your
artwork to improve the quality of the print (if necessary, and of
course not for free).

If you need some inspiration (or want to see the quality of some of
their past work) ask them to take you onto their "shopfloor" -- the
walls of the area where they actually print the shirts are lined with
shirts from previous orders.

The Carnegie-Mellon Riding Club (or biker scum) just went through this.
Here is the info that Mark Andy assembled. I take no credit or blame.
This is fairly recent; within a week or two, anyway.

First, for those of you who don't know about the process, it works
kinda like this. There's a cost for the t-shirt and printing on the
shirt. Then there's a screen charge for making the screen. There's
an artwork charge if artwork is needed. You need one screen per color
and/or different design (ie. a shirt with 1 color pocket and 2 color
back needs three screens.).

Here are the prices. (quoted for 4 doz shirts)

Classical Impressions: They do a lot of CMU business (according to
the guy) and have the lowest prices.

5.00 per shirt for one color. addl. colors .50 per.
20.00 for the first screen, 15.00 addl. screens.
free artwork if it can be done on computer.

Guy Norelli Graphics:

5.00 per shirt for one color. two color 6.00 (single side print)
20.00 pre screen.

specific quote: 1 color front, 2 color back would be 7.00 per shirt
plus screen charges.

Barth Thomas Formals:

5.50 per shirt one color add 1.00 per color/screening
25.00 per screen
10-20 per hour for artwork.

I didn't get in touch with Apple, but I've heard their prices are
kinda high.

Pocket shirts, extra heavy shirts, etc. add .50 to 1.00 per shirt

So, for a one color front and back shirt from Classical Impressions,
in a 4 doz order it'd be:

5.50 * 48 = 264 <-- extra .50 for addl. screening
$35 for screens

totl = $300 for 48 shirts.

add .5 * 48 + 15 for 2 color back to get $339

4 color back, 1 color front is $417

I was looking for silkscreeners a few weeks ago and I would MOST HIGHLY
recommend Kress Shirts in Highland park (on Bryant St.). Ask for Fran
Kress. Their # is easily found in the white pages. He got my job done
very fast, was friendly, and his price was very competitive.

We printed this year's ECE tshirts at ANG Graphics run by Angelo
Norelli ( 566-1714) and it's by Mercy Hospital on Forbes Avenue.

He did an excellent job with a 2 day turnaround time to print
72 shirts after we'd ordered them. There is no art department
but he gives good advice and he's now got a Mac to help with
the silk screening so his process is probably even better.

An art department generally charges about $40+ an hour and they
usually don't come up with the idea you had conceptualized. That's
what we noticed. It's better to work with somebody around with
artistic talent and get somebody like Angelo to smooth out the
edges.

Try ANG Graphics on Forbes Avenue: 566-1714.

It's basically just one guy and a helper. Cheap, quality work
and a friendly dude (Angelo, the owner.)
He's been good to the ECE department and I'd recommend him.

uses good shirts, takes CMU purchase orders, and does good work.

Jeffrey,

I work for the Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program. We've had
t-shirts made at a place in Washington, PA. VERY, VERY high quality. We
took our art work; they can probably do art work for you. Best prices in
the Pittsburgh area; I know, I called every company listed in the Pittsburgh
phone book. You'll be happy with the results. If you want to see an
example, come to my office (SEI 4125).

The place is:

	Skirpan Company
	2800 North Main Street
	Washington, PA 15301
		222-2384
Ask for Cindy Brookman; you can tell her that I referred you. Last year we
paid $3.75 pre shirt; I understand that they've gone up to either $4.00 or
$4.25 per shirt. They can give you directions; it's a 60 mile (approx.)
round trip, but well worth it when you consider quality, price, and delivery.
