Craig,
    You can't get something for nothing.  If all you have to offer
a bank is your willingness to directly deposit money into their
coffers, you'll have to call around.  Get the list of acceptable
banks from Warner Hall.  If you have more money, things can get better.
I like Parkvale.  They're friendly.  They're open late Thursday nights
and Saturday mornings in Squirrel Hill.  They're never too crowded.
They have a main office in Oakland.  They also have a brochure which
may suggest a way in which you can get a free checking account with
them.  They don't have banking machines.  You have to shop around,
and take everything that is said verbally with a grain of salt.  A
lot of people have responded that they don't get charged by Mellon,
but I did.
