Mitzi, Wilson, & Harry Q.,

Here's what I got from my inquiry about antique stores.
Plus what we we found while roaming around the countryside.

Have fun, Bonnie

PS. I found a pew and am having a great time cutting it down (it started
at 10-ft, but now it is 9-ft and I will cut off the other end tonight
to make it 8-ft, whch is what I need it to be).

What we did:

From Washington, we went to Leesburg VA where there are 2 relatively big
antique galleries (big places divided up into stall-like areas each run by
different people). You can get flyers about all the antique places in
the area at these places. Then we went out along 9 and stopped at several
of the places mentioned in these flyers.

At each store, we asked for recommendations on where to go from there.
Everybody was really helpful and we were never in doubt about where the
next concentration of antiques stores was or how to get there. I highly
recommend this procedure.

We went on to Harpers Ferry, then up along 67, stopping in several places
along the way. We tried to get to Berkeley Springs (below), but ran out of
time. We turned north at Pennsylvania Route 219N and saw several
interesting looking places that were closed by the time we got there. We did
go to about 20 places in all.

There are also about a dozen places in the Sommerset area - and you can
get a flyer about all of them in any of them. The ones on the main
street in town seem to be a bit more expensive than the ones on Route 31E
going out parallel to the turnpike, but Shoemakers in town was actually
quite reasonable (I got a not-antique cobbler's bench in great condition
to use as a coffee table for $25 there).

Happy antiquing,
Bonnie

Bonnie,
Berkeley Springs, WV, is only 6 miles off of the interstate (I-270?)
between Maryland and the PA turnpike. It's famous for its curative
baths, which are in a state park in the center of town. George
Washington bathed there. You can take home some of the water for free
(if you have your own bottle) [from a spigot]. It's picturesque, and
I'm sure there was at least one antique store, although we didn't go
into any.

Bonnie, One of the most obvious places is New Market, MD, a small town
along route 70. I haven't been there for about 4 years, so take that into
consideration. Last time I was there, it was a quaint little town with a
number of nice antique stores. Some were pricey to expensive, but others
were quite reasonable.

Make sure you check a map to see if route 270(?) out of DC intersects
interstate 70 before New Market.

There are also a few places along route 30, but that's probably out of your
way. Let me know if you want their names.

I hope you all have a good time! I'd appreciate knowing what other places
you find. Thanks. -Wilson

Hi, Bonnie. I had to look up the name, hence the delay. The town is called
Schellsburg, and it is within a half an hour of Bedford (which also has a
number of antique stores). Very quaint "one stop light" town along route
30; has a nice B&B close by. Have fun. -Wilson

Bonnie--

In that neck of the woods, most of your "good buys" come from the
(breaking up the) Homestead Sales which are, I belive, announced in the
county newspaper. If I remember correctly, "The Shenandoah Herald"
usually has a good listing. If you take Rt. 66 from D.C., that will
throw you onto Rt. 81 which runs the length of the county from
Stephen's City (about 10 mis. north of the 66-81 junction) on down to
Woodstock. Woodstock is also the county seat and has several action
places (Pangles in the only one I can think of now). Also, Rt.11
parallels 81, but goes through and becomes "main street" for about
half a dozen towns -- some with populations of less than 1,000 -- between
Woodstock and Steven's City; I think several of the towns have "antique
stores" along Route 11. But your best antiques come from the Homestead
Sales & Auctions listed in the paper. Most importantly, the people
in the Valley are pretty friendly -- just stop and ask at a local
business and you'll probably get some good information. Let me know
if you need any more info about that vicinity!

Cheers,
--Kathie

Hi,

If you're willing to go a bit out of your way, you should stop at Old
Ellicott (sp?) City in Maryland. It's in nice countryside, and the town
is almost entirely antique stores. I'm sorry that I don't have good
directions, but it's in the Baltimore-DC area, and it's next to
Ellicott, which is probably large enough to be on a map.
