I posted to general asking about private woodworking shops, after we found that
the MCS Machine Shop would charge us $40 an hour (without putting a reasonable
limit on the number of hours) to do some work. We wound up going with the
machine shop in the end (Joe Sadecky, Doherty 330, x2780) after switching to
plexiglass as the base material (instead of laminated wood).

Here are the replies I received.

BTW, Commercial Plastics (231-2212) is a good and cheap source for plexiglass.
They're on 2022 Chateau Street on the North Side, and are pretty easy to get to
(take the Ft Duquesne bridge to the north side, go past the west end bridge,
take chateau street 12 blocks (there's a big sign), staying in the extreme right
hand lane).

Mark,

I have a reasonable shop at home and would be willing to help. It's a small
job I might do it for you. My home is in Mt. Lebanon, so it might not be
convenient for someone to make a lot of trips there from CMU. Can you
describe the job in more detail?

Try Scott in the Architecture Woodshop in the 1300
corridor of Doherty . He is both Architecture special faculty and
proprietor of a cabinetry business.

Try Cartiff Signage Systems. They build for us the frames for the Warp
boards and I know that they operate their own woodshop. At the time I
dealt with them, they were very reasonable. Owner: Les Cartiff (823
5063). He is the brother-in-lay of Hugo of Hugo's delicatessen, that's
how I met them.

I build fine custom furniture for people out of
my shop at home. Lately been concentrating on
dining room tables (red oak), and writing tables
(mahogany). My prices (IMHO) are very reasonable
as compared to the real-world furniture market
which my pieces would be equivalent to in quality
of materials and craftsmanship.

Assuming that I would feel capable to make what
you need, I would be happy to give you an estimate
given the specs and your time constraints.

You might try Tom Merriman in Architecture. He has made a number of pieces
for people in robotics. Hans Moravec's desk, Raj's desk, Hopping machine
table etc. Good work, the price seemed resonable as well.
