Here is what I found out about Portrait Artists:

VERBAL RECOMMENDATIONS
++++++++++++++++++++++

Tom Ralya's son Rich started out as a civil engineer at Berkley and changed
his major to art after being in a school art contest where he was one of
two people in the exhibit to get an A for his work.
He does several sketches to get the hang of your face and then
does a final drawing. He charges $100.

Jim Tomayko suggested either his wife Laura (he has a self-portrait
she drew in his office, SEI 4204) or Cheri Soriano (SEI 4211), but since
Cheri hasn't contacted me since the post, I assume that either she is not
interested in portrait work or doesn't read the bboard.

If you want a really nice one, I'd recommend one of my teachers: James
Adams. He's the illustration teacher in the art dpt. I've seen some of
his portraits and they're really nice. I have no idea what he charges,
though.

I can highly recommend artist Jan Isherwood for portraits.
She lives in Squirrel Hill, phone 421-3102; but she often
sets up at Station Square on the weekends to do quickie
portraits. She works from live subjects or photos, and does
everything from a charcoal sketch to full color pastel portraits.
And she's easy to work with. Calling her would be best.

I do portrait artwork. I am an art student at CMU as well as a
computer science student. I could show you my portfolio, if you would
like to see it. My portraits are very realistic if that is what you
are looking for. I have worked in many formats and with many mediums
(oil, acrylic, charcoal, graphite, watercolor, pastel). If you want
it done this weekend, I suggest charcoal or graphite. I'll show you
samples of each. You can send me email or call me. I think email would
be the best way to reach me.
Thanks,
Christine Fleming

Do you still need a portrait Artist?
The work you describe below is right up a friend's of mine
alley, she is a freelance artist who works per assigment
at CMU.
I have included a copy of her plan file below, it has
all her phone numbers and her email address. I just
spoke with her on the phone and she mentioned that she
woule probably be on campus later on today and definetly
tomorrow.
So I suggest contacting her.

slides, technical drawing, diagrams etc. These are produced both by comp-
uter (mostly Macintosh) and by hand depending what is required.
Outside of the university I work as a freelanse artist: watercolour, oil
  painting; landscapes, portraiture and illustration.

Thanks so much for forwarding the file to me. I've read it and
have a comment -- I would avoid hiring Kim Faught. This might be way
outdated, but still, it's hard to forget. I hired Kim in 1984 and 1985 to do
a series of illustrations for some user's manuals that I was devising. The
manuals were for a project called Spice and the project's component names each
carried the name of a particular spice. Additionally, there were other
components that were non-Spicey, but that had interesting names (like
Mercury). We wanted her to do some interesting illustrations for the covers,
illustrations that would link the product to its name in an interesting sort
of way. In most cases, we had the idea that we wanted and just needed her to
either copy it from an art book or to devise it from scratch. She did a nasty
job. The illustrations were surprisingly poor (it was a surprise because I
know that she is capable of reasonable work). She also took several months
beyond her original estimate and charged the project for it also. I had to
really pester and hound her to get the work done. SHe's a very nice person,
but she was a bear to work with. It could be that she was taking advantage of
me or of the project since she was good friends with several people on the
project team (and therefore took liberties to be late and not work up to par).
Regardless, it was not a good project and it was tough on me.

I am a design major and have done portraits before. I have not ever
thought of recording them down, but have some references and some
sketches I've kept from my figure drawing classes, etc.
