Mark,

Here's the second one: Recycling at SCS

Becky

- - ---------------------------------------------------------------

@MajorHeading(Recycling at Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science)

The School of Computer Science recycles glass, aluminum beverage cans,
cardboard and some types of paper. There are large blue plastic drums on
almost every floor of Wean Hall for glass and beverage can recycling.
Cardboard should be left outside your office door and marked "Please Recycle."

Paper recycling, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated.

@b(Paper)

The School of Computer Science is trying to reduce the amount of paper used.
Ways to do this include: using file previewers instead of printing out
documents, making double-sided printouts and copies, sending e-mail instead
of paper mail, etc. For more information on ways to use less paper, type
@b(man save-paper) on any School of Computer Science machine.

The School of Computer Science currently recycles paper into two different
streams: high-quality and low-quality.

@b(High-quality Paper)
Paper for the high-quality stream should be deposited at the closest
collection sight. There are collection sites on almost every floor in
Wean Hall, usually in the printer rooms. Just put the paper in the
empty copier or laser printer paper boxes.

High-quality paper consists of @b(only) the following:

@begin(itemize)
laser printer output

copier output

plain paper fax output
@end(itemize)

@b(Low-quality Paper)
You can collect low-quality paper in the small blue wastebasket in your
office. When it is full, drop it off at the nearest paper collection site.
There are paper collection sites on almost every floor of Wean Hall, usually
in the printer rooms. Put your paper in the large blue bin marked
"Recycling."

The low-quality paper stream consists of @b(only) the following:
@begin(itemize)
white or colored paper

white or colored envelopes with windows (but not brown or golden envelopes)

booklets or manuals

fax or telex copy paper

adding machine tape

carbonless forms

self-adhesive notes or envelopes (including Post-Its)

soft-covered books with white pages

greeting cards

manila folders

tab or time cards

ruled paper

paper with color logos

paper with gummed labels

outer packages for copier or laser printer paper
@end(itemize)

The following types of paper can not be recycled at @b(all):

@begin(itemize)
glossy materials

magazines, phone books, newspapers

paper with food waste on it

napkins, paper towels or tissue

waxed items (such as cups, plates)

lunch or grocery bags

brown or golden envelopes

hard-covered books

photographic and blueprint papers

transparencies
@end(itemize)

Trash in a recycle box can cause tons of recyclables to be rejected
by the recycler, so please be careful.

Information about recycling at the School of Computer Science
is located in the /../g/usr/recycle/info directory. If you have
any suggestions or questions about the recycling process, please send
e-mail to recycle@@cs.cmu.edu.
