Harry --

Here are the responses to my post. Due to previous experience and a
recent, intriguing news article, we were particularly interested in a
kosher bird. We finally bought at Greensberg's, 2223 Murray Ave. They
dress the meat in house and, while paying for live weight, we found the
quality worth the premium price.

Kathy Swedlow's suggestion about breast-down roasting is a good one.
We prefer, however, to brown the breast first and then invert the turkey.
Stuffing under the breast skin helps retain moisture, too. No basting
required.

A small shop in Aspinwall called Ruggeri's was selling fresh turkeys
during thanksgiving. Maybe they will do it for Christmas as well.

(If I remember, I'll send you their address on Monday)

The shop in Aspinwall (Ruggeri's) is indeed taking orders for fresh
turkey. They can be found on Commercial ave. (it's a one block street).

Roy--

There's a little family grocery store on the corner of Northumberland &
Shady (kind of diagonally across from the Rehabilitation Institute)
by the name of Ruggeri's. The people there are very friendly, the
quality is good, & they try very hard to be accomodating for their
customers (they have virgin olive oil & Droste's chocolate-- two things
I'm partial to & which are hard to find.)
They had been taking fresh turkeys orders for Thanksgiving-- I assume they'll
do the same for X-mas. In any case, I think you would get a kick out of it.

I guess it depends on your definition of fresh, but I bought a fresh
Butterball at the Beagle for Thanksgiving and it was just fine.

roy,

my father always gets his turkeys at mcginnis sisters (sp?), in the sears
shopping center, monroeville. as an aside- the best way to cook a turkey
is breast-down. that way, the white meat is very tender and juicy.

PS you can always try farmer's choice in the strip district. their chickens
are the best in the city, because they are "peck-fed." i can only imagine
that their turkeys would be good also.

I order my fresh turkeys from the meat department at the Food Gallery
on Centre Avenue, and so far they've been wonderful. I even did a 25-pounder
on Saturday night (dinner for 30) and it was tender clear through... though
basting every 10 minutes for 7 hours had something to do with it!

They're not cheap -- 99c/lb when turkeys at Giant Eagle are going for half
that price. But I'm happy with them.

The Food Gallery (a grocery store on Centre Avenue near Negley)
normally carries fresh turkeys.

I have been quite happy with there fresh turkeys in the past.

Roy,
I bought a fresh turkey for Thanksgiving from the Farmers' Market
in East Liberty. It was very good. The Farmers' Market is sort of
next to Sears (I can give you better directions if you need them)
and is normally only open on Saturday mornings (5am-2pm I think)
but it is also open on the days before Christmas and Thanksgiving.
The people who sell the turkeys run the last stall on the right in
the building. I recommend that you pay them a visit this Saturday
to order a turkey.

Did you used to buy it at Freshmart? I was pretty sorry when Ben
closed up shop. Giant Eagle in Sq. Hill had some a couple of days ago
but it always goes fast. If you haven't found anything yet, I guess
you should look in the Strip.
