Harry Q.,

The following are responses I received to a question regarding
competent guitar repair/adjustment people in the area.

Have fun,

Chris Boyle at Swissvale Music has a really good rep but takes a while
to get around to your box because the demand keeps him backed up.

I hear the guy at Pittsburgh Guitars on E. Carson on the Southside
also does good work.

I've heard good things about Pianos & Stuff in Blawnox, but I've never
seen their work or played (that I know of) anything they've done. I
have seen the work of the two above and the tone and action were very
good.

Swissvale Music - No need for further questions. They do a remarkable
job as far as set ups, neck adjustment and etceteras are concerned. I
believe the cost is $28.00 (+ cost of a set of replacement strings of
your choice, unless you supply your own.) per guitar.
Not bad at all considering the sound you get afterwards.
They even polish the fingerboard and remove
excess gunk from electronics and frets. Well worth it as far as I'm
concerned. They did two guitars I bought from them, and I'm
definitely (sooner or later) going to have them do my other two.

The person you want to speak to who does the set ups is Chris.

I do my own intonation/action/etc. adjustments now as I wasn't very happy
paying $20 out to the guys at the music stores for what I considered
sub-par work. At any rate, there is one really good luthier in town
(in my opinion). His name is Chris Boyle, and he used to be the guitar
guy at Swissvale Music. He may well still be there, I just haven't needed
his services for a while. Give 'em a call at 351-5882 and ask if Chris is
still their man.
