Dr. Bovik,
Here's the one recommendation I received to a post I made asking about
sewing machine repair.

Your machine may need overhauled if playing with the tension doesn't
work. It may be totally out of adjustment.

Al Morrone on West Liberty avenue is a great repairman. He makes house
calls, but may have to take the machine with him if he feels it needs
overhauled. Anyway, he's a great guy, and even gave me a lesson on my
machine (circa 1920) on how to keep it in working order AND found me an
owner's manual for not quite the same machine, but close enough for me
to know what to do! (The manual is mentioned to show that he does go
the extra mile.) Good luck!
