From: John Hagerman <hagerman@rx7.ece.cmu.edu>

I just applied for a marriage license, and found out some things that
might be of general interest.

First, I called Tel-Law (227-1555, tape 9098) to learn what to do. It
was correct about the following:

- Get your blood test before going to apply for the license. You must
go to a doctor to have blood drawn, they will send the sample to a
qualified lab, and the results are returned to your doctor. To get
the results you must pick them up from your doctor and sign the form
at that time. Major legal stuff going on here, I guess. Apply for
the marriage license within 30 days after getting the test results.

- The marriage license office is in "Clerk of Orphans' Court Division"
in the city-county building downtown (Grant street). The office is
on the first floor, and there is a huge sign next to the office door
that says MARRIAGE LICENSES, so it's easy to find. The office phone
  number is 350-5550.

- The only "unusual" information you must know for the application is
  the birthplaces of your parents.

- There is a three-day waiting period after applying. When you apply
you will get a card that you must take back to pick up the license.
The license is good for 60 days.

Unfortunately, Tel-Law is WRONG about the fee. The fee is $32, and it
must be paid in CASH ONLY.  Tel-Law is also wrong about office hours;
specifically, the office IS open on Saturdays. I don't know the exact
hours, and they probably change, so call the office for details.
