Subject: East Coast Beach Vacations
Message-Id: <636235652/cwk@GANDALF.CS.CMU.EDU>

The following is a post I made and the responses I got concerning East
Coast beach vacations. We eventually opted for the North Myrtle Beach
area.

We've gone to beaches in Delaware in past years (Sea Colony -- north of
Ocean City -- 800-732-2656), but are thinking about a change this
year. If you have a favorite East Coast beach, I'd like to hear about
it. We are interested in:

* One week in August
* Availability of beach-front condo rentals (i.e. with kitchen) or
  equivalent living conditions
* Somewhat family oriented, as we will be traveling with kids

I'll send the results to Bovik. Thanks.

My family goes to the Myrtle Beach, SC area every year. In particular,
we go to North Myrtle Beach at Cherry Grove to avoid the "mass" of people
in Myrtle Beach proper. Also, the rental prices are a bit cheaper. It's
right below the North Carolina line and there are lots of good seafood
places in the area.

I don't really recommend Virginia Beach too highly. There's not much
actual beach and there are a lot of people. However, the surrounding
area offers a lot (Williamsburg, Norfolk, Busch Gardens, etc...).

Nag's Head, NC is pretty nice, too and prices are pretty reasonable.
There's not much to do, but that can be a plus. It can be fairly
windy there, making the temperature seem cooler than the SC beaches.

Litchfield and Hilton Head, SC are both VERY nice places, but way out
of the average person's price range. If you have plenty of money, they're
wonderful places.

Hope this helps!

hi.

i have been to chincotegue [the wild ponies] which is very nice although
if you go there when they have the pony roundup [3rd saturday of july i think]
it can be very very crowded. mystic harbour which is about 1/2 hour north
is also nice if you like boating on the ocean.

another favorite place that i've gone with my parents is canada. it's really
very beautiful and i highly recommend it. the last time we went we drove
about 1 hour north of the border/10,000 island area to west point [?] which
is a small town located on the edge of one of several connecting lakes.
again, if you like boating [fresh water now] this is a great place --
there are many small islands which you can rent canoes and paddle out to,
the lake is fine for swimming, there are even water docks you can take your
boat through. also, the surrounding area is very gentle, rolling farmland
-- it's great for biking and walking. the place we stayed at was a
bunch of cabins which you can rent [includes kitchen, etc]. not condos, but
comfortable and clean.

the town is about 5 minutes by car, 10 or so by bike.

hope this helps.

We always go to North Myrtle Beach, SC. It is very family oriented (as
opposed to Myrtle Beach proper, which is swarming with teenagers); you
have to pretend to be a family unit to rent a place there. (We go with
friends and pretend to be cousins.) There are lots of beach-front
condos, but we like to rent a house across the street from the beach
for much less. We've always used Lewis Realty. The beach itself is
wonderful; allegedly the widest in the world, very soft sand, warm
water, usually enough waves to be interesting but not threatening. The
weather has almost always been great (in ten years of vacations). I
can hardly wait!

Lewis is in NMB. Their number is 800-334-3390 (I think--I have it on a
piece of paper here, crossed out [Even if it's wrong, it won't cost you
anything.]). One thing that makes the Carolina coast so nice, other
than the quality of the sand itself, is that the golf stream parallels
the coast until Cape Hattaras, and then veers off, so southern NC is
the furthest north that you get essentially tropical water. The beach
along the southern NC/northern SC coast is referred to (modestly) as
the Grand Strand.

My vote is for the Outer Banks above anything else on the East Coast -
unless you can afford Hilton Head! It's quiet and clean and oriented more
towards families than young singles -- there is virtually NO nightlife.
Actually, there isn't much at all to do after dark except go to a
restaurant. But if you're looking for a place thats quiet...

I used to go down there religiously every year for a long time to go hang
gliding at Kitty Hawk kites (your kids would enjoy watching that if they're
not old enough to fly themselves). The Wright Brothers museum is
interesting and there are MILES of national seashore (Hatteras). The towns
of Kitty Hawk, Killdevil Hills and Nags Head basically all run together.
Young Reality handles a lot of rental property. On the west side of the
peninsula ('sound side') you can rent jet skis and catamarans. If you go
further south along the banks, you can actually pretty much avoid people all
together if you like that. We would often spend entire days on a
completely deserted stretch of beach. Or, you can go down as far as the
island of Okracoke (a short ferry ride from Cape Hatteras). The beaches
there are great -- it gets a finger of the Gulf Stream and the water is
often unusually warm and sand bars let you wade pretty far out.

If you write the Chamber of Commerce at Nags Head, NC they will send you a
nice package of information. Just beware -- this is only if you are
looking to vegetate on the beach for a week. Also, the ocean down near
Hatteras is too rough for kids but the beach is still nice.

Charles,

As a former resident of South Carolina, I strongly recommend their
beaches to folks who don't mind the drive. North Litchfield beach,
about 30 miles north of Charleston, is particularly nice. My family
rented a beach house there a few summers ago and really enjoyed it. My
understanding is that damage from Hurricane Hugo was minimal that far
north.

Charlie,

My family always liked Cape May, which is south of Wildwood and very family
oriented. There is some guy from Pittsburgh who owns a motel/efficiency
apartment, and he gives good rates to people from Pittsburgh. I can try and
dig up his name if you like.

BTW, I intend to bring in my turntable for you to look at - I went through
the diagnostic you suggested and it all points to the turntable. Let me
know when a reasonable time is and I will try to actually bring it in!

Edisto Island, just south of Charleston S.C, is a family-oriented
beach--i.e., none of the commercial stuff you get at Myrtle Beach.
Lots of beach-front and off-the-beach-front houses, and an especially
nice beach with camping at the Edisto Island State Park. I have no
idea how they fared in Hurricane Hugo, although reports from my
mother's relatives in that area indicated that islands south of
Charleston did better than areas north of Charleston. Edisto is about
an hour's drive from Charleston and two hours' drive from Savannah or
Hilton Head. It'd be about a 15 hour drive from here. We
especially like collecting sharks' teeth and other bits of fossils
there.

The only realtor I can remember off-hand is Edisto Island Realty, but I
know there are several others. You could call the chamber of commerce
for others.

we have rediscovered cape may, nj. i used to go there when i was small and
all beaches were great, but recently we have been spending 10 days each summer
there. it's wonderful, very quiet, not like wildwood or virginia beach. it's
the first beach resort in the u.s., and the whole town is a national historic
area (victorian). the houses are gorgeous, there are a zillion bed and
breakfast places, all peoples' homes. i don't know if you'll find a
beachfront condo, but it is beautiful.

it's expensive, as are all the nice beach resorts, but we think it's worth
it.
