Barbara - there are a few hotels that offer a cheap weekend rate
but I'm not sure about weekdays. I stayed in the Shelbourne Murray
Hill which is in a good location in Manhattan (34th & Lexington)
for $75/night (for 2 people). It was a nice place (even with kitchen).
I can bring in the info on it tomorrow or if you are in a hurry
I think that they advertise in the back of the New Yorker. - Edie

I once stayed at the Roosevelt, near times square. It is dilapidated but
not gross or obviously unsafe. It is also cheaper than nearby convention
hotels. Also, if you don't mind an hour's transportation by bus and
subway, you might stay in Queens.

When I visited Columbia last month they put me up in the Empire Hotel
at Broadway and ~65th street. Cost was $65 plus ~$7.50 tax a night.
Don't forget NYC and state tax. If you want more info I've still got
a copy of the receipt.

I have two New York guides which could interest you though one is a little
old. Why don't you stop by, I am one of your neighbour: room 7110.

Barbara,
I've stayed in 2 of a group of five hotels in NYC that have
"bargain" rates of about $50/night. You must reserve in advance. One,
on the east side near the U.N. (2nd around 46, I think), is the Beekman
Tower, which is a rather elegant hotel.

The hotels in this group all have (modestly) equipped kitchens, so you
can make coffee, etc. I can't remember the name of the other hotel I
stayed at, but you can find it, along with the names of the other
hotels in the group, by looking in the New York Times travel section,
which is where I found it.

Let me know if you have more questions about it.

Barbara,

I have been in NY with my family and I have found a *verycheap* *clean*
place. The name is LEO HOUSE, 332 west 23rd street, phone
	 (212) 929-1010. They have rooms for two persons for $20 a
night, they require a reservation two weeks before and a
deposit of $20 a person or a room, I do not remember.

Now you want to know how it is possible to find a so cheap place in
Manhattan. It is a religious, catholic place. It means a very
secure place where you do not need to lock the door with the
chair and sleep with one eye open. Of course it is not
wonderful, but it is clean, quiet, old-fashioned hotel.

Vincenzo.

Barbara,

I went once to the Pickwick Arms which is located in 51 st between 2nd
and 3rd (a nice neighbourhood). The cost was 45 or 50 a night (year an
a half ago) for a room for two people. It was clean, which is my most
important criterion, and had a bathroom in the room. No TV, but who
wants to watch TV in NY.

Feliz viaje. --Pedro
