Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awards grant to SCS to fund new Women@IT Program, a program that aims to increase the number of women in the PhD programs. “We are moving against trends in society that have resulted in a ‘shrinking pipeline’ of women in IT fields,” said Professor Lenore Blum. “We believe our program can and will be a model for other institutions across the country and help reverse this trend.” Press Release

Dean James Morris to Step Down in 2004 Dear friends: I've decided to step down from being Dean at the end of my five-year term next June and return to research, teaching, and some new things. I've enjoyed my time as Dean and appreciate the work you have done to make SCS a great place for all of us.

Contract from DARPA to develop Project "RADAR": Reflective Agents with Distributed Adaptive Reasoning. Researchers at SCS have received an initial $7 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as part of a five-year project to develop a software-based cognitive personal assistant that will help people improve their productivity in the workplace.
Associate Professor Tuomas Sandholm is the 2003 recipient of the Computers and Thought Award, given every two years by the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) to an outstanding young scientist working in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Press Release

The first-ever RoboCup American Open. Researchers and their soccer playing robots competed April 30 to May 4. Honda's ASIMO, the world's most advanced humanoid robot, will also be performing. Events Schedule and News Release

April saw the first ever SCS alumni reunion!
SCS Alumni Reunion Weekend
March featured CSD Head Randy Bryant elected to the National Academy of Engineering for "contributions to symbolic simulation and logic verification".
February 8 was the first SCS-Day: around 500 SCS faculty, staff and students turned out for a packed program of workshops and entertainment to celebrate the diversity of talent and people on SCS.
January saw the Dedication of the Michael Mauldin Auditorium.
