Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awards grant to SCS to
fund new Women@IT Program, a program that aims to increase the number
of women in the PhD programs. “We
are moving against trends in society that have resulted in a ‘shrinking
pipeline’ of women in IT fields,” said Professor
Lenore Blum. “We
believe our program can and will be a model for other institutions

Robot Hall of Fame."Our
goal is to create a permanent, interactive exhibition involving robots

Zhang, Associate Professor, CSD, awarded a $7.5 million National
Science Foundation grant to design a new communications infrastructure.
The goal is to provide high-speed, broadband Internet access to virtually

Dean
James Morris to Step Down in 2004 Dear friends: I've decided
to step down from being Dean at the end of my five-year term next
June and return to research, teaching, and some new things. I've
enjoyed my time as Dean and appreciate the work you have done to
make SCS a great place for all of us.

Contract from DARPA to develop Project "RADAR":
Reflective Agents with Distributed Adaptive Reasoning. Researchers
at SCS have received an initial $7 million from the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
as part of a five-year project to develop a software-based cognitive
personal assistant that will help people improve their productivity
in the workplace. |

Sandholm is the 2003 recipient of the Computers
and Thought Award, given every two years by the International
Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI)
to an outstanding young scientist working in the field of artificial

Groundhog
Robot Displays Mettle in Mine Groundhog, the first of several
robots that the Robotics Institute has developed since August in response
to the Quecreek Mine accident, is tested in Mathies Mine.

The first-ever RoboCup
American Open. Researchers and their soccer playing robots competed
April 30 to May 4. Honda's ASIMO, the world's
most advanced humanoid robot, will also be performing.
