CMU Energy + Cleantech Hackathon

Hosted by the Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation at Carnegie Mellon University, the CMU Energy + Cleantech Hackathon is an opportunity for collegiate students to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing leading energy companies and organizations. The Hackathon will take place virtually from 1-4 October 2021.

Students will work in interdisciplinary teams for 48 hours to combine their energy expertise, data analytics, business intelligence, and economic reasoning to solve a specific problem presented to them. Participants have the opportunity to engage with real-world energy data, network with energy experts, and win $2,250 in total prizes →  First Prize ($1,000)  → Second Prize ($750) → Third Prize ($500).

A typical winning team will comprise of participants who are skilled in one or more of the following areas:

  • Statistical programming using tools such as R/Python
  • Building machine learning models
  • Knowledge of  data analysis workflows from data exploration and cleaning to model improvement.
  • Creating data visualizations
  • Domain expertise in Energy Engineering/Energy Policy
  • Strong project management capabilities
  • Presenting solutions/recommendations to an audience with varying levels of data literacy
