CALYPSO: Private Data Management for Decentralized Ledgers
Distributed ledgers provide high availability and integrity, making them a key enabler for practical and secure computation of distributed workloads among mutually distrustful parties. Many practical applications also require strong confidentiality, however. I will present CALYPSO, an approach to enhance permissioned and permissionless blockchains with the ability to manage confidential data without forfeiting availability or decentralization. CALYPSO addresses two orthogonal challenges confronting modern ledgers: (a) enabling auditable management of secrets and (b) protecting distributed computations against arbitrage attacks. CALYPSO introduces on-chain secrets, a novel abstraction that enforces atomic deposition of an auditable trace whenever users access confidential data, and it provides user-controlled consent management that ensures revocation atomicity and accountable anonymity.
Ewa Syta is an assistant professor of computer science at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University, and received her B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science with a specialization in Cryptology from Military University of Technology in Poland. Her research interests are in computer security and distributed systems, with a focus on applied and theoretical aspects of building secure and trustworthy infrastructures. Most recently, she has been working on scalable ledgers, provably secure public key infrastructure and asynchronous coordination and consensus.
