Privacy in the Healthcare Sector: Challenges and Best Practices
Norman Sadeh is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at CMU, where he co-directs the Master's Program in Privacy Engineering. Norman is also co-founder, chairman and chief scientist of Wombat Security Technologies, a leading provider of SaaS anti-phishing and cybersecurity awareness solutions. In the late nineties he worked for the European Commission as Chief Scientist of the EUR550 million EU research program in e-Commerce, which included all pan-European research activities in cybersecurity and privacy. Norman received his PhD in computer science from CMU, a MS in computer science from the University of Southern California and a BS/MS degree in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics from the Free University of Brussels. He also holds a CIPT certification from the IAPP.
Nathan Kottkamp concentrates in healthcare law, including federal and state regulatory compliance, HIPAA, EMTALA, privacy and confidentiality requirements, data breach response, patient rights and clinical ethics, fraud and abuse, self-referral prohibitions, medical staff privileges, healthcare contracts, "certificate of public need" proposals, reproductive medicine, healthcare antitrust, healthcare professional education accreditation, advance directives, and reimbursement issues. Nathan’s clients include health systems, hospitals, specialized medical practices, mental health services providers, pharmacies and universities. Nathan is a frequent speaker on a range of healthcare topics including HIPAA, EMTALA, and advance directives.
Nathan holds the CIPP/US credential as a Certified Information Privacy Professional from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Furthermore, Nathan serves as the HIPAA Privacy Officer for McGuireWoods LLP and coordinates HIPAA compliance on behalf of the firm.
Omar Khawaja has spent 15+ years delivering, developing and managing security solutions for startups, service providers, consulting firms and enterprises. Omar is currently VP and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Highmark Health, an integrated health care delivery and financing system, employing more than 35,000 people and serving 40 million Americans in 50 states. Prior to Highmark, Omar was at Verizon Enterprise Solutions, where he had responsibility for their portfolio of security solutions with customers in 72 countries.
Omar currently serves on the board of the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST), on the Governing Body of Evanta, on the CISO Workgroup of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and as adjunct faculty for the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) program at Carnegie Mellon University. Omar is a regular speaker at industry forums (speaking engagements include RSA Conference, Information Security Forum, Mobile World Conference, Cloud Security Alliance, Carnegie Mellon University / CERT), and has also been quoted in media outlets such as Financial Times, New York Times and CNBC.
Omar's certifications include CPHIMS (Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems), CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), and CCSK (Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge). Omar has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from University of Virginia's Darden School of Business.
