With the world continuing to go digital, concerns about data privacy are increasing. What happens to the sensitive information we provide online? And what can we do to protect it? To celebrate the 2011 International Data Privacy Day, Heinz College will be hosting a poster session and panel discussion with CMU privacy researchers on Wednesday, January 26 in Hamburg Hall.

Moderated by Alessandro Acquisti, Heinz College associate professor of information technology and public policy, the panel will include Travis Breaux, assistant professor at the Institute for Software Research; Lorrie Cranor, associate professor at the Institute for Software Research and the Engineering & Public Policy department; Steve Fienberg, the Maurice Falk university professor of statistics and social science; Jason Hong, associate professor at the Human Computer Interaction Institute; and Norman Sadeh, full professor at the School of Computer Science. It will be moderated by Alessandro Acquisti, Heinz College associate professor of information technology and public policy. Acquisti, Cranor, Fienberg, Hong, and Sadeh are also researchers at CMU CyLab, one of the world's premier research programs in cyber privacy and security.

The poster session and panelists will cover a broad spectrum of timely privacy issues, including protecting confidentiality in census data, understanding how individuals make privacy decisions, designing privacy interfaces for Twitter and Facebook, and using formal tools to detect flaws in privacy policies. Several privacy tools developed at CMU, including the privacyfinder.org search engine, privacy "nutrition labels," and the Locaccino location-sharing system, will be demonstrated.

The panel session will take place in Hamburg Hall 1000 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Food will be served immediately prior to the panel. The poster session will begin at 11 a.m. in the Hamburg Hall foyer and concludeat 2 p.m.
