The Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Institute will be one of the anchor tenants of Hazelwood Green, the former Jones & Laughlin Steel site in Hazelwood being redeveloped for mixed uses, Carnegie Mellon University has announced

The ARM Institute, as well as CMU's Manufacturing Futures Initiative, will occupy two floors of a 94,000-square-foot building being constructed within the enormous steel skeleton of the historic steel mill known as Mill 19.

The last vestige of the steel plant, a coke works, ended operations on the site in 1998. The vacant 178-acre site along the Monongahela River most recently was used as a testing ground for self-driving vehicles. Those included CMU's Boss, the self-driving SUV that won the 2007 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Urban Challenge, as well as a number of the Robotics Institute's autonomous rovers and drones.
