Manuela Veloso, professor of computer science, is spending her sabbatical year as one of 50 fellows at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.

Veloso was selected from a pool of more than 700 applicants for the highly competitive fellowship program, now in its sixth year. She is one of 14 scientists who have joined 16 humanists, 10 creative artists and 10 social scientists as fellows this academic year.

Each fellow works individually and across disciplines on projects during the year-long residency. Veloso, who directs Carnegie Mellon's highly successful RoboCup teams, will be studying integrated intelligence in robots and teams of robots. She is scheduled to make a public presentation of her work on Oct. 18 at the institute.

"This program at Radcliffe is fantastic," Veloso reports. She will be in and out of Pittsburgh over the year, with her next visit tentatively scheduled for early October, and she continues to advise all of her students as well as the RoboCup teams.Past fellows include Pulitzer Prize-winning writers Geraldine Brooks and Caroline Elkins, geophysicist and planetary scientist Maria Zuber and the husband-and-wife anthropology team of Jean and John L. Comaroff.
